Established in 1916

Chemists developed an electrolytic process which created a non-toxic, stable disinfectant. Looking for a production facility, they were directed to a building in which the poet John Milton (1608-1674) had lived while writing “Paradise Lost”. Inspired by this, they decided to call the brand Milton and created Milton. They launched Milton Hypochlorite Fluid formula, known today as Milton Sterilising Fluid.

In the first part of Milton History, the unique Milton Sterilising Fluid was first used as a disinfectant. It was used during the First World War and was taken to the trenches to treat skin burns and effects of gas and chemical attacks.

A Household Name

After the First World War, the Milton Fluid continued to be used as a general antiseptic, disinfectant and food preservatives, as well as being used in hospital surgical procedures.

1947: The Milton method for babies

In England during the late 1940s, there was a widespread outbreak of gastroenteritis in the hospitals, which led to the death of 4,500 babies under the age of 1 year.

Physicians struggled to identify the source of infection. The Ministry of Health sent a call via the BBC asking scientists and companies to find a solution.

Milton pioneered a new approach to sterilising baby bottles. The Milton Method of cold water sterilising was born and successfully trialled. Milton was credited for saving many babies lives over the years, and the Milton Method is still used in hospitals and homes today.

21st Century Evolution

Milton extended its product offer into hygiene and in 2003 launched 2 must haves: Antibacterial Surface Spray and Antibacterial Surface Wipes. This range was specifically developed to be used around babies and to provide a safe and clean environment. In the last few years, this plant-based hygiene range grew with the launch of Milton Baby Bottle Cleaner.

In sterilising, Milton extended its range in 2010’s with the launch of 2 sterilisers suitable to be used in the microwave as well as with the Cold Water Method: Milton 2 in 1 Combi Steriliser holding up to 6 baby bottles and Milton Solo Travel Steriliser allowing parents to keep a clean bottle and small baby accessories anywhere they go.

Trusted by midwives and health professionals, Milton has been used by hospitals and in homes for over 100 years, protecting what’s precious every day.
