Becoming a parent is an extremely rewarding experience, but it also brings new demands on your time, energy and routine. Between feeding schedules, nappy changes and disrupted sleep, focusing on your own fitness can feel challenging. However, staying active as a parent is not about intense workouts or strict regimes, it’s about supporting your physical and mental wellbeing so you can care for your family with confidence and energy.
Regular physical activity has benefits beyond appearance or weight management. For parents, being fit can reduce fatigue, support mental wellbeing, improve back pain, promote better sleep quality and set a positive example for your children. Even if these actions are small, when done consistently they can make a big difference.
In this stage of your life, staying fit may look different from what it did before you had children. Longer gym sessions might not be doable when you have less time and you aren’t sleeping well. However, even short walks, gentle stretching or home-based workouts can be just as valuable. The key is to focus on movement that feels achievable and sustainable within your daily routine.
One of the best ways to stay active is to integrate movement into tasks you’re already doing. For example, go for walks with your baby using a pram or carrier, play with your toddler, or even household tasks like cleaning or tidying are great opportunities to move.
Parenting often involves repetitive movements such as lifting, feeding and carrying which can strain the back and shoulders. Gentle core and posture-focused exercises can help support your body and reduce discomfort. Activities such as postnatal-friendly core exercises, Pilates or yoga and simple posture checks throughout the day are great ways to keep your posture and core good.
Consistency matters more than intensity. Setting realistic expectations helps prevent frustration and burnout. Aim for regular, manageable activity rather than striving for perfection. If you miss a day (or week), simply start when you can. Progress as a parent might not be linear, but that’s completely normal.
Taking care of your own wellbeing supports the health of your entire household, keeping you fit and strong to chase after them for years to come. Regular movement sets a great example for them.
